The Black Book Conversations
art business practices for professional artists
by Daniel Flores -curator/artist/mentor

My name is Daniel Flores, I was born and raised in East LA.

From an early age, I was interested in the Aztec history and mythology as depicted throughout East Los Angeles. Especially in my neighborhood, there are murals in every building and every block. The story of the Chicano, The Aztec and the Immigrant are evident.

All my life memories contain drawings. Drawings on paper, on cardboard, on clothes, on walls: drawings with pencils, crayons, pens and paints. I cannot remember a time in my life when I was not drawing.

Even with all that art in the neighborhood and the rich creative history Chicanos share with the Aztecs and Mexicans, it was tough growing up an artist. I didn’t know that art classes existed. I didn’t know there were clubs, organizations or even higher education schools that could teach me to hone the skills I was born with. It never occurred to me that i could grow up to be an artist. I thought i would grow up to be a Doctor or an Attorney. I like helping people and I can logically argue people out of their opinions.

Sometimes I don’t know what label to use for myself because my art mediums are broad but all centered on art. I am an artist; my earliest surviving drawing is dated 1975. I am a designer; I started designing websites and flyers in 1998. I am a Tattoo Master; I started tattooing in 1995 and now I teach. I am an illustrator; I learned Adobe Illustrator in 2001 and now I teach classes at BINDERS Art Store in ATL. I am a mentor; I founded Art Is King, The Black Book Conversations and Mano A Mano Art Shows to give young artists the opportunity to learn the business aspect of art and encourage their development into independent Working Art Professionals.

I believe in creativity and the unbridled expression of that creativity in positive forms. I have a saying for artists: If you don’t make money with your art, then someone else will.

I am focused on my art career as a professional. I have many goals and 2014 has started with a bang. In 2014 I have to draw every day for work, for fun and for practice. I have a saying that goes like this: “Amateurs do it till they get it right, Professionals do it till they cant get it wrong”. At the end of this year I will have 365 drawings that I will compile in an art book. I see a Kickstarter campaign in the future of that art book!

This column is one of my goals for 2014. I will share some my professional stories and steps in building my art business with you thru this column and whenever possible, bring in other professional artists from time to time to share their stories.

For more info on the workshops, classes and artist mentoring, logon to www.tbbcatl.com we have a website full of resources and tips including video from past conversations. Starting next week, we will also feature a podcast on iTunes and a video series called Art Is King. Keep your eyes open for more details as we continue to publish this column.

The goal is to Educate each artists to succeed in the art business.

Till the next drawing!

Atlanta’s Largest Temporary Public Art Exhibition Seeking Artists for Fifth Annual Exhibition

Atlanta –Art on the Atlanta BeltLine has issued a Request for Proposals (RFP) for artists to solicit outdoor, temporary works of art for presentation on the Atlanta BeltLine in the fall of 2014. The upcoming exhibition represents Art on the Atlanta BeltLine’sfifth year in presenting visual and performing art on more than eight miles of the Atlanta BeltLine corridor. Art on the Atlanta BeltLine kicks off on Saturday, September 6, 2014 with the annual Atlanta BeltLine Lantern Parade.

Potential projects should reflect the historic, environmental, cultural, functional, urban design, and/or aesthetic aspects of the sites and should be well-researched, well-planned and feasible. Potential projects could include sculptures, murals, music, dance, theater, performance art, amenities for visitors, planting or environmental works, and more. Artists are encouraged to submit proposals that marry their artistic visions with the landscape and sustainability themes of the Atlanta BeltLine. See previously funded projects at art.beltline.org.

The submission deadline is April 21, 2014. The RFP is available for download from art.beltline.org and will also be available for submission through callforentry.org. Electronic submission is available immediately.

Installation will begin in June and projects must be installed by the opening of the exhibition on September 6, 2014. A timeline and installation schedule will be developed with each artist or artist team. Four information sessions will be hosted to provide additional information and answer questions around this exciting project:

Time: 6:00 p.m.
Location: The Warhorse at the Goat Farm
1200 Foster Street
Atlanta, GA 30318

Date: Sunday, April 6
Time: 3:00 p.m.

Atlanta, GA 30316

Since 2010, Art on the Atlanta BeltLine has showcased the dynamic installations and performances of established and emerging artists along the east and west corridors of the Atlanta BeltLine. The exhibition is an inspiring way to explore this emerging system of parks, trails, transit, and development that reclaims a 22-mile loop of historic rail lines around the City’s core. Since its inception, the exhibition has grown more than 40 percent, and last September’s Lantern Parade kicked off the 2013 exhibition by drawing more than 10,000 participants to the Eastside Trail. See completed trails and explore current art locations on our interactive map: www.beltline.org/map.

For complete details regarding proposal specifications, deadlines, budgets and requirements, please view the Art on the Atlanta BeltLineRFP at art.beltline.org.
